Procter & Gamble: brands it owns and its ownership tree
Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG) is a publicly listed company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States that owns 38 consumer brands across 4 categories, and has 2 recorded transactions.[1]
Procter & Gamble was founded in Cincinnati in 1837 by a candle maker and a soap maker who had married sisters. It deliberately narrowed to around 65 brands in the mid-2010s, selling roughly a hundred others, and now reports through fabric and home care, baby and feminine care, beauty, health care and grooming.
Procter & Gamble acquired The Gillette Company in an all-stock deal, adding razors, Oral-B and Braun and making it the largest consumer goods company in the world at the time. Regulators required divestitures in electric toothbrushes and deodorants.
Procter & Gamble transferred 41 beauty brands, including CoverGirl, Max Factor, Clairol and Wella, to Coty in a Reverse Morris Trust structured to be tax-efficient for P&G shareholders. It was the largest single step in P&G's programme of cutting its portfolio from about 170 brands to 65.
