Yahoo is owned by Apollo (the United States, NYSE: APO), which acquired the brand on 1 September 2021.[1][2] Yahoo was founded in 1994 in Sunnyvale, California and was independent until 2021.
Yahoo began in 1994 as a hand-built directory of websites made by two Stanford students, and was for years the front page of the internet. It turned down a $44.6 billion offer from Microsoft in 2008 and sold its core business to Verizon for $4.5 billion eight years later.
Funds managed by Apollo Global Management acquired ninety per cent of Verizon Media, comprising Yahoo and AOL and their properties, in a deal valued at about $5 billion. Verizon retained the remaining ten per cent.
