Cadbury was founded by John Cadbury, a Quaker who opened a tea and coffee shop in Birmingham in 1824 and added drinking chocolate as an alternative to alcohol. The company built the model village of Bournville for its workers. Kraft Foods acquired it in a contested 2010 takeover, and it passed to Mondelēz when Kraft split in 2012.
