Minority stake
A shareholding too small to give control.
A minority stake is a holding of less than half a company's voting shares. The holder shares in the profits but cannot direct the business, and does not consolidate it in its accounts.
Minority stakes are worth recording because they show influence that pure ownership records miss. Unilever retained 19.9% of The Magnum Ice Cream Company at the demerger, and Nestlé is one of the largest shareholders in L'Oréal. Neither is control, and neither makes those companies subsidiaries.
